Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc
Zeta Phi Beta was founded at Howard University (Washington, D.C) in 1920 by 5 Black women: Arizona Cleaver Stemons, Pearl Anna Neal, Myrtle Tyler Faithful, Viola Tyler Goings, and Fannie Pettie Watts. The founders envisioned a sorority that "would directly affect positive change, chart a course of action for the 1920s and beyond, raise consciousness of their people, encourage the highest standards of scholastic achievement, and foster a greater sense of unity among its members.", (zphib1920.org). The Xi Delta chapter was chartered in the University of Pittsburgh on December 3rd, 1971 by 13 Black women: Diana Badger, Patricia Baker, Ella Carson, Jacqueline Claiborne, Victoria Gooch, Barbara Johnson, Eleanor Brown, Bonnie Lewis, Eva Gooble, Joan Poelnitz, Janet Johnson, Marjorie Overton, and Cheryl Sessoms. Some significant events in the Xi Delta chapter include the Steel City step show, NPHC week, and events promoting awareness on several issues.
