Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc
Sigma Gamma Rho was founded on November 12, 1922, by seven educators: Mary Lou Allison Gardner Little, Dorothy Hanley Whiteside, Vivian Irene White Marbury, Nannie Mae Gahn Johnson, Hattie Mae Annette Dulin Redford, Bessie Mae Downey Rhoades Martin, and Cubena McClure. The group became an incorporated collegiate sorority on December 30, 1929, at Butler University (Indianapolis, Indiana). Sigma Gamma Rho has a big commitment to community service, and we can see that through their slogan, “Greater Service, Great Progress,” (www.sgrho1922.org). The Theta Nu chapter was chartered in the University of Pittsburgh on November 16, 1980, by 5 Black women: Dayna Hassell, Karen Robinson, Karla Milton, Dianne Robinson, and Tracey Brown. Some important events in Sigma Gamma Rho sorority include raising funds and awareness for several causes such as childhood cancer and community service.
