Description

Arnie Sowell has been described by Pitt track and field coach Carl Rees as “one of the greatest runners who ever lived.” He was a part of the Pitt Track and Field team from 1953 to 1957 and claimed four NCAA titles during that time. On the international level, he claimed the gold medal at the 1955 Pan American Games in Mexico City for the 800-meter race. In the 1956 Olympics, he placed fourth in the 800 meters. He also set the world indoor 880-yard run record in 1957 and tied the world’s 1,000-yard run mark in 1955. Arnie Sowell was inducted into the Pitt Athletics Hall of Fame in 2020.
