Title

Sam Clancy

Description

Sam Clancy is regarded as one of the city of Pittsburgh's greatest athletes, having played for the Pitt Men's Basketball team from 1977 to 1981. During his college basketball career, he maintained impressive averages of 14.4 points and 11.6 rebounds per game. Remarkably, Clancy is the only player in Pitt's history to surpass both 1,000 points (1,671) and 1,000 rebounds (1,362) during his time with the team. He earned recognition as a three-time Eastern 8 All-League selection and played a pivotal role in leading Pitt to four winning seasons, including winning the 1981 Eastern 8 Tournament championship, securing an NIT berth in 1980, and earning an NCAA bid in 1981. Clancy's athletic prowess extended beyond basketball; he was a member of the U.S. Gold Medal team at the 1979 Pan American Games under coach Bobby Knight. Despite never playing collegiate football, Clancy was drafted by both the NBA's Phoenix Suns in 1981 and the NFL's Seattle Seahawks in 1982. Clancy concluded his 12-year professional football career, playing for teams in the NFL and USFL.
