Roger Kingdom

Description

During his time at Pitt from 1981 to 1984, Kingdom emerged as one of the university's most accomplished athletes, particularly on the international stage. Despite being on a football scholarship, Kingdom showcased his exceptional talent in track and field. He secured two Olympic gold medals in 1984 and 1988, establishing himself as a dominant force in the sport. At Pitt, Kingdom demonstrated his prowess by winning multiple NCAA titles, including the 1983 indoor and outdoor national championships in the 110-meter hurdles, as well as the 1984 indoor title in the 55-meter hurdles. His achievements extended beyond collegiate competitions; he set world and American records and became one of only two runners to win consecutive Olympic titles in the 110-meter hurdles.

In recognition of his outstanding contributions to track and field, Kingdom received several prestigious awards, including the 1989 USA Track and Field Athlete of the Year and the 1989 Jesse Owens International Amateur Athlete of the Year. He was also honored as the Track and Field News 1989 Athlete of the Year. In 2005, Kingdom was inducted into the USA Track and Field Hall of Fame, and he has been recognized in several other halls of fame, including the USTAF Georgia Hall of Fame, Georgia Sports Hall of Fame, and Western Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame. Kingdom was inducted into the Pitt Athletics Hall of Fame in 2018.
