May was a key player in Pitt's impressive four-year record from 1977 to 1980, where the team achieved a remarkable 39-8-1, including four bowl appearances and three Top 10 finishes. Known for his solid performance as an offensive tackle, May played a crucial role in Pitt's success, particularly during his junior and senior seasons, where he was part of two 11-1 teams and didn't allow a single sack. His outstanding performance in his final year earned him unanimous All-America honors and the prestigious Outland Trophy, recognizing him as the nation's best interior lineman. Following his collegiate career, May was selected by the Washington Redskins in the first round of the 1981 NFL Draft. He became a standout member, contributing to three Super Bowl appearances and winning championships in 1982 and 1987. After his tenure with the Redskins, May continued his professional career with the San Diego Chargers and the Arizona Cardinals. In recognition of his accomplishments, May was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2005, and his jersey number, 73, was retired by Pitt. He was also inducted into the Pitt Athletics Hall of Fame in 2019.
