Description

John Woodruff was the first Pitt athlete to earn an Olympic gold medal at the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin. Woodruff won gold in the 800-meter run, the first of four African American track and field athletes to win a gold medal. Following this achievement, Woodruff remained undefeated. He won three consecutive NCAA 880-yard titles from 1937-1939 and in 1940 he set the US record of 1:48.6. Woodruff was inducted into the Pitt Athletics Hall of Fame in 2018 and his Olympic gold medal is on display at Pitt's Hillman Library.
