Description

Douglas has made his mark at Pitt as both a track and field athlete and football player. In track and field, he won four intercollegiate championships in the long jump and one in the 100-yard dash. He also earned three National Amateur Athletic Union championships in the long jump. He participated in the 1948 London Summer Olympics and won a bronze medal in the long jump. As a football player, he was the second African American to score a touchdown against Notre Dame. He later founded the Jesse Owens International Trophy Award, which honors the most outstanding amateur or Olympic athlete in the world. Herb Douglas was inducted into the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame in 1980, the New York Athletic Club Hall of Fame in 1990, and the Pitt Athletics Hall of Fame in 2018.
