Craig "Ironhead" Heyward played on the Pitt Football team from 1984-1987 and is Pitt's fifth all-time leading rusher with 3,086 yards. His talent shined in the 1987 season, where he rushed for 1,791 yards to earn All-America honors and finish fifth in the Heisman Trophy balloting. Craig Heyward and Tony Dorsett are the only Pitt running backs to rush for at least 100 yards 12 times in a single season. After his career at Pitt, Heyward was drafted by the New Orleans Saints and played 11 total seasons in the NFL. His best professional season was in 1995 when he rushed for 1,083 yards and was selected for the Pro Bowl. He was inducted into the Pitt Athletics Hall of Fame in 2020.
